.22 lr or 9mm for first handgun?

I’m finally getting around to purchasing my first gun – a handgun, after going shooting with my buddy a few times. I am leaning towards something like the SR-22 because ammo is so cheap and I’ve ready mostly good reviews. I figure I can learn to shoot this for a while, then upgrade to a new gun/ buy a rifle, etc. if that is what I desire.

Is there any reason not to buy a 22 handgun and opt for a 9mm or a bigger caliber? This will be used strictly at the range.
