So I recently got a Smith & Wesson, M&P 15 Sport II, AR, 556NATO, with the 16″ Barrel. This weekend I have a three hour training class on getting to know your first AR. After that in looking to get some ammo for the range but I wanna get the right ammo. My question is what brand and model should I buy for range use and home use? I know I’ll have to buy both to train, but I’m not sure whats the best quality that won’t break my bank and companies to avoid. Is brass the way to go and avoid steel case? Is .223 cheaper and more abundant than 5.56? I live in Michigan. Thank you.

Any basic 55gr will be fine for the range. Winchester, Federal, Remington, PMC….etc

For home defense, I use Hornady 62gr soft points.

Steel is fine for range use but use brass for home defense.

Run whatever you can find the cheapest for range use.

I have an M&P as well. Since it has a 1:9 twist rate barrel, it doesn’t stabilize heavier bullets like 72 grain so keep that in mind if you ever plan on shooting at considerable distances.

For anything home defense related you can get away with using those heavier grain defense rounds, but for range and class I’d use some decent quality 55 grain FMJ.

If you can, grab a couple extra mags, some for training and some for the home defense stuff.

I have the same rifle. You can put pretty much anything into it and it will run perfect. Just not soft tips. Never soft tips in a semi

She doesn’t deserve brass if she won’t take steel….
Straight up though. It’s all plinking at the range so get as much as you can whenever you can…. Range use is totally different from home use. Practice with both.

Many ranges around me don’t allow steel cased ammo. You may wanna check and see if you can run it.

Like others said I would get cheapest you can find for range use 🙂

In my experience .223 and 5.56 are priced the same and are equally hard/easy to find.

People have offered good advice for range, pretty much whatever you can find…just NOT REMANUFACTURED ammo. Chances are you could shoot it and never have a problem. There is also a chance the shit could blow up your gun. Just make it a non issue by buying factory new ammo.

Home defense? Barrel has a 1:9 rate of twist? Black Hills 50 grain TSX
