Nobody should be shooting old surplus 8mm anymore. The guns that fire it are too valuable to risk damaging with old ammo that is always corrosive and may squib or otherwise fail. You owe your gun better than to feed it trash.

Difference in years are calendar difference. 1947 Ethiopian calendar is 1955 Gregorian calendar

I’ve never had this ammo be this bad, I’ve shot 1 carton so far and have had minimal hang fires. Maybe you just got a poorly stored lot?

So this ammo should be 100% good to go with a heavier Wolff spring behind the firing pin.

Of course I bought 50's Yugoslavian 8mm from AIM right before they got this stuff in for cheaper. Even worse to find out is this 8mm surplus is available now from other sellers. I would prefer not to deal with AIM but at the time they were the only ones I found with it in stock.

@Forgotten Weapons Ian, is this 8mm safe to use in a Hakim? I recently got my hands on a very nice Hakim rifle, and I was wondering if this ammo is safe to use in the Hakim as I've been reading the horror stories about not using Turkish Ammo in the rifle. Now I'm wondering what surplus besides Yugo and Romy, is safe to use in this new amazing rifle I have.

I've seen Classic Firearms is selling 300 round cartons for $100, cough *99.99*, plus shipping. I have never bought from them and hear both very good and very bad stories from their customer reviews. For this ammo in particular people gave it 4 or 5 stars.
I have used ammoseek.com to find ammo. What do you guys use?

Very useful video. I just picked up a few boxes of this at a local gun store. Fifteen rounds per box for $6.50. Now I have an idea of what to look out for when I take it to the range.

Think about all of those crates that were just thrown away after they were opened. Today, you could likely sell them to any and everyone. Especially military collectors, gun guys, car guys, women with projects to do, women with to much junk and nowhere to put it…. All kinds of people 🤣

These are invaluable. You`re really rolling the dice when you buy surplus ammo, so these will be a great reference.

Since the packaging is written in Amharic (official language of Ethiopia ) i assume the year is also in Ethiopian calendar which is behind 8/7 years. So the headstamp on the cartridge 1955 (Gregorian calendar) is the same as 1947 (Ethiopian calendar) on the packaging material.

On the hangfire shot he called "substantial", I could hear the trigger/hammer click before the shot. That's got to be a pretty long delay. Most of the time those noises overlap.

this is the ammo that I was using that caused my injury. I got a box of this ammo and had 7 missfires in a row, i waited 30 seconds after each one cause safety. Well when the 8th one clicked i only waited 10 seconds cause i was frustrated as anyone would be. So i unlocked the bolt and it fired. It sent the bolt backwards and into my right cheek and cut me just shy of the jaw bone. the cut is about 4 inches long from the center of my cheek to the edge of my jaw. I write this hoping that if someone ends up in the same situation as i did (hang fire) they dont make the same mistake i did.

I recently got a crate of Yugo 8mm Mauser, and the can was already opened and was a mixture of 50s Yugo, 50s Czech BXN code ammo, along with a couple of boxes of this stuff and was curious as to what this was. I'm assuming all of the surplus Yugo/Bulgarian 8mm currently available came in with the other Ethipian stuff, but very interesting nonetheless!

when you do these ammo reviews how about passing a magnet over the pulled bullets. there are steel jacketed bullets you know. shoot a crate of steel jacket through your k-98 and that barrel is toast.
