Hello all, question for the NC residents that own guns. I recently got a gun purchase permit. My understanding is that i can now legally buy a gun and open carry it. Is this correct?
Never owned a gun and have no idea what the process is in the store so forgive my ignorance with this.
Do i take my purchase permit to the store, and buy the gun that easily? Or do i buy it, they run some checks, then once those are done i go back to get the gun?
    Any info would be appreciated

Also, as far as choice of a gun…i like the look of the glock 5 gen 5 currently for sale for 590 i believe, seems reliable and a good option for conceiled carry, which i plan on doing in the future. Do you think this is a good choice for a first gun?

    Thanks for reading

You need to get some firearm safety instruction before you venture off into the wild with a handgun. Range time, with an instructor!

    Tf is a Glock 5

And judging by how ill-informed you are and seemingly have done zero research the last thing you need is to open carry and draw attention to yourself

Because you will get questioned. You will get looked at. And you will open yourself up to everything that comes with it.

*Local man arrested after an altercation at a gas station over hotdogs lead to a shooting, more at 10…*

Get some education OP, you’re just a liability to everyone around you without it.

Yes, you’ll just need to read through the firearms laws on the NCDOJ website. Some areas prohibit firearms, so pay attention to where you carry.

However, since you have never owned a firearm I strongly recommend taking a firearms course before you carry your pistol around. I don’t know where you live in NC but I’m sure a range near you offers a firearms basics class, as well as a general marksmanship class. Firearms are tools and simply having one is not enough.

For the gun buying process, since you have a purchase permit what you’ll do is go to the gun store, tell them you want the Glock 19 (great choice btw, and not a terrible price assuming you meant G19 not Glock 5). They’ll get the gun for you, and you’ll fill out a federal Form 4473. The purchase permit acts as your federal background check (because they already did one when you got the purchase permit) so as soon as you’ve filled the form out and paid you can walk out with your new handgun.

One other thing you’ll want to keep in mind open carrying is the level of retention you need. I recommend a Safariland ALS holster. As you draw, you need to press down on the retention tab with your thumb to release the pistol from the holster. This keeps someone from running up on you and grabbing your gun (you can look up videos of this happening to people). Just practice drawing with your pistol unloaded and you’ll get familiar with it.

This blows my mind that you need a permit just to purchase a firearm (I’m from louisiana). Talk about 2nd amendment infringement sheesh

NC resident here. As others have said, do research and watch videos. Take a class. Know how a gun works and all the safety rules first. Otherwise you’re just another irresponsible gun owner. You also need to be prepared to go to the range regularly and practice.

And personally, I think open carry is stupid. It just paints a target on your back. Anyone wishing to do harm or commit a crime in your vicinity will zero in on that making it a huge liability. If you’re standing at the drink cooler in a gas station open carrying and someone goes in to stick the place up, guess who just because the primary target and doesn’t even know it.
