So I live in Iowa and hunt public land. This is my first season but feel like I’ve already had some awesome experiences and made some newbie mistakes. I found a spot that is a hike from the parking area and I’ve not seen any other hunters in the woods so I feel good about it.

I’ve been in the woods as much as I can the last few weeks and seen a lot of activity. Last Sunday I had a shot at a big boy but like a moron, I forgot my range finder and judged him at 30 yards when he was at 20, maybe closer. Shot way over his back. He didn’t respond to the doe call I have but was super interested when I grunted and used the rattle bag.

Was back in the same spot this morning. Each time I’ve been there I’ve seen the same does moving along the same path and then saw the same buck and what I think are two other smaller ones kinda just wandering around.

None of the bucks seemed to respond to my calls. I’ve used doe estrus urine and calls. They heard me, looked then just kept on moving not coming close enough for a shot. Didn’t bolt or take off like they knew I was there but just kept meandering though the woods. Is it because I suck at calls or they not interested in the ladies yet? Everything I read says the rut should be in full swing but maybe it isn’t?

Or is this another lesson that sometimes deer just don’t do what everyone thinks they should? Thanks for any advice!

I am from Iowa too, living in the east central part of the state. Deer are deer, what u saw was normal behavior. If they weren’t interested in ur calling today that is normal. Could be ur calling too much, could be more interested in the does that are there than coming to see you. Maybe they didn’t get down wind of ur scent or were too far down wind. If ur seeing them on a consistent basis ur doing something right. Can you close the distance to the trail(s) they are using in order to get a shot?
