My son and I are looking at trout fishing in Alaska next summer. Has anyone fished Coopers Landing and the Kenai River? Suggestions and things to avoid would be welcome.

Fish flesh flies and beads….don’t bother wasting your time with other flies.

I hope you like company. Big fish (my first bow was 31×19 – I posted a pic of it recently) but tons of people. Honestly I will never go back.

June and August can be rainy, I’ve found that July is a good time. The water is glacial silt so if you’ve never been in it expect to not have a ton of clarity but it’s a beautiful teal color. With that being said, I agree with the previous poster that egg patterns and flesh flies are the ticket but it’s not impossible to take some fish on dry flies if you find the right seams and side channels. I’ve used 5 wt rigs to 8wt rigs and it would be helpful to have a heavier rod for your underwater fishing and the lighter for up top. If you have any experience floating than you could save yourself some guide fees and just rent a raft in Anchorage and do it yourself.

Very busy. If you’re looking for the chance at large fish it’s a good spot but there are much better places that can be accessed very easily that have more appeal to me personally
