    Hello!
I have been taking my 15 year old son out turkey and deer hunting since he was about 10. This year he has expressed an interest in bear hunting. I have never been bear hunting and don’t know the first thing about it. Quite honestly it makes me feel a little nervous. Anyone on here have any tips or anything? We’ve watched videos and I’ve done some online research. It’s black bear and we are in New England.

    Thank you!

I see them all the time while deer hunting and scouting in southern NY. They pretty much walk up on me in the woods – not aggressively, they just have bad eyesight, and if the wind is in your favor they might never know you’re there. If they see or scent you, they usually just walk away. Sounds like you’ve also found where they are. I decided to try hunting them for the first time in the upcoming early season, because the meat is good, and because they are trying to manage the population in the area. Hopefully there is better advice from people with experience, but as a newb for this type of game, I’ve been studying up on proper shot placement, field dressing, etc. Also, I’ve really been going over my plan for getting one out of the woods. I’ll probably need to quarter it and pack it out, and have coolers ready in the car. I’d rather be totally prepared to actually get one and not be successful, than to go shoot one in the woods and realize I wasn’t prepared for the hard part.

Clay from Bear Hunting Magazine has a bunch of good videos on youtube. There are also some useful ones from the game departments in Colorado and Quebec.

Hunt Suburbia podcast covers hunting in Mass and New England generally, it’s mostly about bow hunting deer, but is informative. Mass sounds like an underrated state for hunting.

    Good luck!

Is baiting legal where you live?

Look up your states regulations on baiting. Bear hunting is pretty difficult without bait. Honestly it’s pretty difficult even with bait. In 19 years of deer hunting in rural NY I have seen 1 bear. Personally I think your best bet is sunrise, on a saddle between ridges, playing the wind to the best of your ability.
