Has anyone caught anything on a mouse dry fly? What did you catch? How big was your mouse? Where were you fishing? Pond? Small river? Big water? These mouse flies intrigue me to no end?

This is why you should carry a mouse pattern or two. Trap caught dead mouse thrown in creek. Eaten by rainbow trout.

There is nothing better than western Alaska rainbows on mice. You haven’t lived until a 28″ or bigger rainbow does a head to tail take on a golf ball sized blob of deer hair. It takes some practice to wait until they land on it. They freaking love big hunks of protein, and will come from a long way to eat one. The takes are varied. Sometimes it just gets sucked down, sometimes it’s like a large mouth bass. Sometimes its like the head to tail take of a big mayfly. Incredible.

I tie the Mouserat style, tail, nothing else. Eyes and ears are silly and unnecessary. The hook is I think a 5/0 popper hook.

I’ve caught 12 inch Brook Trout on a #6 Mouse and 6 pound Smallies on the same fly. Everything loves them and they’ll figure out how to get them in their mouth!

I was using a 4/0 on a lake. Caught a nice 23″ walleye just outside of the reeds with it. https://trickflies.ca/collections/pike-flies/products/mouse

Brown trout and largemouth bass. Not as big of a fish as you’d think. Amazing that juvenile largemouth would eat this.

Largemouth on a small lake, along with some really ambitious crappie.

Rainbows, Browns, Cutthroat and Brook. Lakes, rivers and streams. Fish a mouse and report back. Fun and different!

Both brown and Bows, river at night. A beaver dam along the edge. Cat tails on a lake taken by a pike.

Every few years there is an “explosion” of mice along some New Zealand rivers. At such a time it is amazing to see a 5 pound Brown or Rainbow chase a deer hair mouse pattern on the surface. It is similar in Alaska when lemmings are over populated. The big rainbows chow down on them.
