I plan on using Walker Razor Slims with an nrr of 23, and doubling up with plugs. I mainly shoot indoors with pistol but they occasionally have rifles in there as well.

I saw many suggestions on getting disposable foam plugs as those work very well, however I’m more environmentally conscious and don’t really like buying and throwing away things like that constantly.

The problem I have is that disposable foam plugs seem to have a much better nrr rating than any of the reusable ones I have seen.

    3 questions

    1. Are there any good high nrr reusable ear plugs designed for shooting?
    2. How are the Silicone Putty plugs that you knead and smash into your ear, normally seen used by swimmer?
    3. Since I am doubling up would a lower nrr reusable ear plug, be good enough when paired with the Walker Razor’s meaning I don’t have to worry about question 1 and 2.

You don’t have to toss the foamies away. I use them until they get really dirty but honestly I usually end up losing them rather than exceeding their lifetimes.

Foam earplugs are reusable. There’s no reason to throw them away every time, an individual pair is good for quite a few uses. I’m still using ones from a 20 pack I got for Christmas last year.

If you’re really serious about best protection, just reuse foam plugs. You can use them dozens of times (especially if you keep your ears clean), enough that you’ll lose them before they get too disgusting (and reusables will get just as disgusting just as fast).

If they stop expanding back to their original size, grab another one.

    I just use reusable plugs.

I like the Peltor Tri-Flange plugs, they have a NRR of 26. I wear them when doubling up and find it plenty effective. I also use them at work, I like them because they don’t distort sounds.

I have custom ear plugs made with the some kind of gel stuff they squirt into your ears. I can not recommend them enough. No need to double up with them.

You realize that quibbling over throwing away a couple pieces of foam is silly right?
