I’ve read that PA doesn’t require a license or permit to purchase a handgun but NJ does (where I live). My question is would I be able to purchase a gun in PA then transport it back to my home state, NJ, to keep for home defense only? I’ve read up on the matter and do plan to call my local police station before I go visit PA but from what I’ve gathered it says that it’s legal as long as it’s in the trunk when transporting, unloaded and also in a gun case

Handguns specifically can only be purchased in your home state. It’s a federal regulation

If you’re from NJ and go to PA, they will likely ask for your FID during the purchase. Long guns only no handguns. Source- experience at gun shows

Someone more informed may correct me, but I believe you cannot buy a handgun out of state.

Never ask the police about the law. They don’t know shit and it can only hurt you.
Most gun shops in my experience won’t sell to someone from a more restrictive state just because it could be a potential headache, regardless of what the actual law is.
I bought a Ruger American Rimfire with a threaded barrel in PA as a WV resident, and they took a few minutes debating amongst themselves if threaded barrels were allowed in WV before they would start the sale.

Handguns can only be purchased from an FFL in PA, and you won’t find one that will sell to someone out of state.

FFL here, MOST FFL’s will not hand over your rifle if you are not a neighboring state, theres to many laws and we cant know them all. we can call an FFL in your state but even then if we get bad info its our asses. ill transfer from Wisconsin to Illinois but i wont do Michigan or Minnesota because im not near them to know so it all gets shipped if its not Illinois. its common thing for FFLs to do. you may find ones thats willing but doubtful
