Is it possible to make an ejector an extractor?

Posts I picked up an old iver Johnson single shot 20 gauge and I’m going to put an adapter in to make it 9mm, 38, 17hmr, really whatever I feel like. But the ejector is still so damn strong is there anyway I could just make it extract the adapter rather than eject it? I read on a shotgun form to just change the spring to something lighter like a 1911 spring. I’d also like to know is it difficult to tap a new sight into place?
