Will be in Tampa over Christmas week. Yes, I know it’s not the best time of year to fly fish, and much is dependent on weather/water temps, but being an angler, I’m an eternal optimist. Any tips for the Tampa Bay area in December are greatly appreciated! Anything from flies, fly shops, guides, wading areas, boat rentals, cigar shops, breweries, Stone crab joints, to best Cuban sandwiches.

Cigar City is the only brewery that’s worthwhile, and I won’t wade into the Cuban sandwich debate but the best ones have salami on them (as is tradition in Tampa where it was invented).

As for fishing, it’s gonna be tough, and exponentially tougher without a boat. I’d look at kayaking the Double Branch area, or head down toward Weedon Island. Ft DeSoto is also popular but you could spend an entire week there just finding the fish. Wherever you go, start around the low tide so you can see what the area looks like, and find spots where deeper water meets the shallows. Look for schools of mullet to show you generally how far from shore the gamefish are. They should move streadily inland as the tide rises.

I’ve had good luck there with my 8w at Christmas Island with clousers. Nothing spectacular but always catch something, usually ladyfish.
