The Clutch Claw was arguably the first gimmick in mainline MH to be as major a focus as it was. The first real gimmick was arguably underwater combat in MH 3 (Tri), but even in the two games with underwater combat, most fights didn’t involve it. MH4 introduced mounting and had a lot of maps with lots of verticality and ledges to aid in mounting, but otherwise wasn’t mounting focused. The Clutch Claw was heavily integrated into weapon combos and the flow of a fight, for the worse in my opinion, but i’m sure there are those who enjoyed it. Wirebugs seem a bit more naturally fitted into combat so far, but overall, wirebugs do seem to be just as important to Rise as the CC was to Iceborne, so that might be a new trend for MH, we’ll have to see.

Mounting’s been a thing since MH4 in 2013, the first game of the “fourth generation” of Monster Hunter, which was the 10th mainline game out of 15 so far, or 6th out of 8 if we don’t count G rank expansions separately. It’s been in every game since, so it is something of a staple, but not for that huge a percentage of the series: interestingly enough, before World, mount damage only applied to the back, so besides the topple you get afterwards, you really couldn’t cut tails using mounts, so that suggests this person has only put significant time into World and Iceborne.

I've read this article a few days ago and thought this was poorly written and probably a new MH player. Mounting is not a "staple" mechanic, it's a somewhat recent thing. Also, if you read the comments from that article, you can see people making accounts just to call the writer an idiot.

Im fine with not commenting on absolute stupidity and ignorance, but then he had the hecking GALL to call himself a VET after saying his opinion SHOULDNT be trusted. My brain has lost some cells from this article but I thank you for bringing it to my attention.

Im a vet, i grew up with this series alongside some friends, the games are so engaging that this article itches me in the depths of what it really means to be a hunter. Who the hell cares about graphics? The games have been this very slow progression in terms of looks because the focus is more about the actual gameplay, the fighting between you and the monsters, the beautiful world built up by giving you the tools to imagine the rest. I went through 3 PSPS on MHFU/2 because no matter how the series improved i always played it, if i had a working 3ds atm id hop on those games too, i love these games so much they wear out the handheld console XD so how fucking dare you call these fresh graphics 3ds level. This mans probably doesnt even know that MH was on the WII!!

Im one of those players that loves the old style of monster hunter, its patient and methodical, so when world came about, it really backs up MHGU and what it did for the series in terms of accepting Frontier level creativity. World was like an open window for the rest of the series to take the ideas further, and now its no pun intended RISING with the wind! Rise does anything world tried, but better. World had graphics and realism (which for world specifically, i LOVE, i cherish this concept that we really can have a more western friendly PC MH game because in the future when its done even better???? can we even imagine???) Rise has insane graphics for the switch and what MH is as a series.

Arzuros looks fluffy like a real bear should, his hair moves with his body, the attention to detail screams love.

    G. Itzuchi is an absolute GOAT haha hes a fairly simple monster in looks, but his combat looks and feels so damn good for what is one of the easiest monsters in the game. We get the pack vibe brought to life through mechanics!!

Miz. I cant fucking believe this man has anything to say that isnt 100% LOVE for the Miz in rise. I just cant. everything about miz, the music, HIS NEW RAINBOW SHINE, his looks, his animations, the bubbles, the way he DANCES with you more then before, i cannot find a single negative thing to say!

He doesnt even know RATH is a flagship. Sad hunter noises. This actually hurts me inside.

Why do they let people stuck in worlds low rank talk about the game in any respect?

maybe an unpopular opinion but i think world was a terrible game to be the first game you play in the series. its counter intuitive to the normal series! Its not multiplayer friendly because of shared quest hub, the armor/skills set up isnt noob friendly, too many low HR/MR things that require skill + should be locked behind multiplayer hub progress, too many unskilled hunters complaining about difficulty in the dogpiling kind of way, farming DECOS (reeeeeee) instead of charms which are not a 100% requirement to play the game when you can still be in the early game and craft them, the game is terrible for accessibility because the game is built around you playing for more then just a couple quick hunts while on the way to work on the train or wherever you want. over all its created very entitled "hunters" and i think they should be called out for giving the game a bad rep. world had its faults but that doesnt make me hate the game, it makes me love the future of the series more.

As someone who started with 4 Ultimate, this guy is a konchu sympathizer. I want to see this guy do an egg quest.
Mounting started in MH4. Before that there was even underwater combat

What a coincidence. I had left a comment on this article, I couldn’t even force myself to read all of it because of how bad it was. I must have struck a nerve my comment was deleted.

Imagine being a garbage YouTuber who doesn’t allow someone else to have their own opinion about a fucking switch exclusive game. Also, if doom eternal can play on switch then they could have 1 ported world to switch as well as making rise for other consoles.

if i had no idea about a game or if i dont had much exp. i would use google to find a person who can help me out. in this case it would be gaijin hunter or arekkz.
he could write to them and ask them about the game. they could give him so much advice and knowledge . he could write the article in his perspective with notes from them .

the comparison between rise and world isnt fair at all , the right comparision would be between rise and monster hunter generation ultimate wich both are portable switch games.

Mounting was added in Monster Hunter 4. Should be clarified that I mean MH4U in the west, as we didnt get MH4 until the updated g-rank release. This is irrelevant, though, as I find the "mounted combat" mechanics to be an evolution of the mounting and clutch claw mechanics… and I main insect glaive.

This journalist seems as if he started with World, but he looked up some basic stuff about the previous games (in a similar way that a student would cram the night before a big exam) so he could lie about being a veteran. Probably hasn’t touched a PS2 or 3DS in his life. 😆

Well lots of mh elitist veteran also compared world and gu too. And they always claim gu is alwaaaaays better than world… So why is now it's suddenly illegal to compared world and rise ?

I mean are you surprised? I'm not some dumb ass complained about the graphics on a handheld and compared it to iceborne which plays on console and pc and then says the new wyvern riding is tedious its funny to read how dumb these guys and he calls himself a veteran when he probably only played world boy i don't underestimate the real vets my first was world but I've proceed to play GU and will get rise i dare to call myself a vet but man do i have respect for them i wish i hopped on the band wagon sooner 😅

The scoutflies were cool for like 5 seconds, but the moment you learn the map and monster routes, they end up becoming so fucking cumbersome. Good riddance. I'm glad that they won't ever rip camera control away from me again to show me something I already know, or point me in the opposite direction of the monster because the next track is 50 meters behind me. They were moderately helpful with collectibles, but that was only in tandem with the map. It was then improved with the addition of tailraiders, which is now even more improved with Palamutes and one click gathering. They've been out grown, that's what we in the business usually call an upgrade.

Anybody watch RageGaming? Wait until Cotton finds this article. The only gripe that I have about this is how they morphed HH (my main) to become more "button mashey"– BUT THEY MADE IT SO THAT YOU CAN FREAKING BREAKDANCE ON THE MONSTER'S HEAD INSTEAD. That is a much better trade off in my own opinion
these people are already giving me cancer

Yah this journalist is dumb. Mounting game around in mh4 with the insect glaive.
Warning just shoving my thought below in a messy order so excuse my grammar.

To me I think world was a bit to much in graphics as yes it was supposed to be pretty but it felt busy. I have no clue why a game that’s on a switch isn’t more accessible but it was a pretty low blow to compared this to mh4 which the journalist probably barely touched, he probably just looked at google to find an old school MH game to make the graphics comparison and what is wrong with graphics as to me it’s appealing as not all games need to be breath of the wild for example.

I also have no clue why he doesn’t like the wire bug as it’s FUCKING AMAZING! Who doesn’t want to zip around and do crazy ass combos which is why I love mhxx (like saying xx over gu). World had the stickers and limited chat as trust me nobody on ps4 actually fully typed messages.

I would say more but you pretty much summed up some of my thoughts and I do agree people should let other people do reviews of they aren’t interested in a topic and don’t spend lots of time with said topic. I mean you wouldn’t a Japanese food critique (making this up but just think someone who knows Japanese food more) to write a review on a high French restaurant. But what’s with writing a review with the game only in the demo phase in a week?

Monster Hunter 4 was the debut of mounting. There have been as many games with mounting since MH4 as there was before mounting was introduced.

On the topic of graphics, Yes, MHW aimed and achieved very PHOTO REALISTIC graphics that the switch obviously cant do. MHR looks amazing with its art style and render distance on switch. MHR isn't trying to be realistic, its trying to fit its own style and it does so with excellence.

Articles/reviews like this are another reason I prefer to watch lets plays on YT to see how a game plays / looks / handles, rather than go look up trash like that.
I have nearly every generation from freedom to gen, (played world and iceborne, but didnt buy it), and i'm super stoked about RISE, that i'll probably be shelling out the $400+ for a switch and this beauty! So when i see trash articles like this, its even more disgruntling.

Mounted combat was introduced in 4, or 4U in the west. Certainly not a staple of the series, it’s still a relatively new feature.

Edit: Just to give you some perspective, mounting was introduced nearly a decade after the first entry.

That statement about grass is ludicrous. I started with Tri back on the Wii, and played plenty of 4U, so I can tell you from plenty of experience how wrong he is.

While I may prefer the color/vibrancy of older titles (like 4U), graphically Rise is head and shoulders above any portable title in the series.
