Went to purchase my first gun today and was delayed. I have marijuana charges from about 10 years ago and haven’t had anything since. Thought I might have a bench warrant in another state for a traffic violation but I called to check before going to purchase and I do not. So I should be good to go right? FFL said it’s most likely just because it’s Friday and it’s so close to Christmas the system is just bogged down. Is this possible? How long does a delay normally take to resolve? Am I freaking out over nothing?

December Fridays are above average for background checks. They have been averaging 3million a month for the past few years, 100k per day. [Black Friday was the 2nd highest ever]( only passed by 2017’s BF with 200k in a single day.

I’d guess they are just swamped and the only people that don’t get delayed are perfect records and even then some probably get delayed.

My last gun purchase was made on September 22nd, it is still currently “Pending decision” which is a cool thing Florida does now where I can’t get a yes or no answer and my gun sits at my FFL even though I bought it online and I’ve basically lost that money.

FDLE tells me I have to wait for the investigation to end before I hear back and that’s all the info i can get. I bought a gun 2 weeks before that with no issue, and i have a pretty uncommon name.

Typically it’s 3 days on a delay before they’re supposed to proceed and sell you the gun.

Whether or not they do that…that depends on the FFL. Especially if you opened your mouth and said something like “Gee willikers I had a weed charge a decade ago.”

What’d you answer on the 4473 for 11e? Did you say yes? If so that’s a Deny right there.

Also…if you have a freakin’ bench warrant out, whew lad that’s a big no no.

That marijuana charge could get you denied depending on the severity of it. Length from a charge does not change its effect I had a customer denied from a charge 30 years ago. A delay could take mins to hours to days to weeks. A delay may not have anything to do with the charge as well. It could be busy time or a simple name mix up.
