Rainbow or steelhead? Still a novice. So this was a shock to hook into and land!

What’s the general location of the catch? Great catch either way!

Short answer: Yes
Long Answer: If it’s a common spot for migratory fish(from the great lakes or ocean) and the right time of year then it’s a steelhead which can be colored as a rainbow or in silver phase. If youre in a closed pond or inland stream with no migratory fish then you’re looking at a rainbow. [Others please comment if you understand differently]
Either way that is an awesome fish!! Keep it up

I think the WA fishing regs defines any rainbow over 2 ft (or 18 inches maybe?) a steelhead. Or maybe it has to be in an area where migration is possible?
At any rate, the WDFW has a specific legal definition for a steelhead
Edit to add: Gorgeous area for fishing. I’m pretty luck that I got to grow up and learn to fish in North Central Washington and the scenery (and fish) never gets old

Local regs will define what a steelhead is. Both genetically identical, so…

Spots below the lateral line. Rainbow. Great fish man.

The last episode of Orvis Fly Fishing Guide Podcast, Trout Markings And Their Significance, goes into this a bit. John McMillan has some great insights on resident trout vs steelhead. He’s on two of my favorite episodes of April Vokey’s podcast.

The amount of speckling below the lateral line leads me more towards rainbow. But I’m not as familiar with the lake running cousin of coastal steelhead.

Looks pretty Rainbowy/landlocked to me. No head of steel, more a head of green.
