I recently stumbled on a 20 gauge Remington 870 LW wing master (70s or 80s vintage) that I’m thinking of picking up from a shop, this would be just for some hunting and clays when I want to make my life difficult. I know over the years Remington has changed the receivers on the 870 so would a 90s vintage 870 express barrel fit or a modern 870 barrel fit? Or would I have to track down LW barrels for it?

When Remington first came out with the 20 gauge 870 it was made on the 12 gauge frame. When they came out with a new smaller frame size for the 20 gauge they called it the LW. The two are not interchangeable.

For 12ga it most likely won’t. The distance between the barrel axis and the magazine axis has been shortened 1/8″ or so (also this is why modern barrel/mag clamps fit poorly on 90’s Remingtons and vice versa).

Barrels from the standard frame (not LW) will be rare & hard to find. I hear the 12 gauge light contour barrels don’t fit standard 12 gauge, so this might be the case with 20’s
