I know it’s not the best rifle on the market nowadays. I want one because it’s historical, cheap, and just for hunting and target shooting. If you would recommend it, what’s a good price for it?

GuestJuly 7, 2020 at 1:53 pmFor hunting I’d get a Remington 700 or something like it, it’s just more suited for that use, but if you want a mosin, go ahead and buy one

GuestJuly 7, 2020 at 1:53 pmWhats a good price? $100. Whats a realistic price these days? $250. They aren’t the most accurate rifle. Heavy to lug through brush and woods. If you want a hunting rifle, there are many superior options. That being said, you can hunt with it but i personally wouldn’t. If you want one for fun then by all means rock on.

GuestJuly 7, 2020 at 1:53 pmNot a good hunting rifle. Even if you spend a lot bubbaing it.

GuestJuly 7, 2020 at 1:53 pmI got mine for like $130 back in the day
I recommend it if you’ve got the money. They’re fun to shoot, surplus ammo is cheap (clean with water after shooting before running through your standard cleaning ritual), some are really accurate (mine is accurate enough to hit a 2 inch pole at 500m so hunting would be no problem). It really doesn’t have that much of a kick if you hold it correctly and from my experience the metal buttplate hurts less than the rubber ones they sell for it.
When you look at them, check out the crown and the rifling to make sure it has not been turned into a musket over the years. Find a few to look at then go back and buy the best looking one

GuestJuly 7, 2020 at 1:53 pmPersonally, i would probably grab an sks or pretty much anything else. I had a Mosin once upon a time, and I cant really say anything positive about it. I got it when you could find them for $100, and still regretted it. I got unlucky probably, the crown was wrecked, and rifling wasn’t great. But still, between the size, the weight of the gun, and the recoil through the steel buttplate, i dont think I’d ever consider going hunting with one. Probably if you could find one for $2-250, may be fair, but youre asking for opinions so ill just say it, I wouldn’t. There are a lot of better options if youre willing to spend a bit more or compromise for a modern rifle.

GuestJuly 7, 2020 at 1:53 pmGot one for 250. The best money I’ve ever spent. Love it. It’s a beast. Plus tons of history.

GuestJuly 7, 2020 at 1:53 pmHad a 1934, all stamped and original. Shot plenty of deer in Montana with it for years.

GuestJuly 7, 2020 at 1:53 pmWhen they were $80-120? Yeah, sure, go for it. Now there are way nicer historical/practical rifles for the same/similar price.

GuestJuly 7, 2020 at 1:53 pmThey’re unlikely to get cheaper than they are right now. That’s pretty much been the truth since importation began. For a do-all rifle or a hunting piece, you can do better… Remington 700 or the like. For fun/hobby, a seriously good time.

GuestJuly 7, 2020 at 1:53 pmGo for it. I’ve got a Mosin and a Kar98k. The latter is better in almost every conceivable way, but sometimes crappy guns like the Mosin can be fun too. It’s not gonna break the bank to get both.

GuestJuly 7, 2020 at 1:53 pmJust get a normal hunting rifle, you can mount an optic to a modern hunting rifle. The mosin is not worth the current asking price. Maybe look into a Turkish Mauser, they are relatively cheap and all together better than a mosin.

GuestJuly 7, 2020 at 1:53 pmGet it for the history and the memes. Using it for hunting is ill-advised.

GuestJuly 7, 2020 at 1:53 pmGot mine for $79. Also, a few years ago a 440 round spam can was super cheap. Those ships have sailed.
