So I have an 9mm AR pistol that I’m wanting to put a new free float on. Just bought another 300 AAC pistol and tried to swap the free floats (to humor myself more than anything), and the free float off my 300 was too small to fit over the barrel nut on the 9mm.

Can someone possibly explain to me what the possible difference could be? Is it just because the 9mm is blowback so it has a bigger barrel nut? Are there specific free floats I have to buy? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, and have a blessed day.

Barrel nuts are usually handguard-specific. You can swap them but you’ll need to swap nuts too.

They should be the same receiver specs with the same extension and threads and all. All free float handguards have different barrel nuts it’s a pain in the ass, it’s nowhere near 1 size fits all like the old fashioned slip rings. Even within the same manufacturer it isnt uncommon to see that several handguards use different barrel nuts and all are proprietary. You need to switch the nuts as well as the handguard.
