I purchased a Mossberg model 88 with a 26″ barrel, then ordered a ‘Hunter’s Specialties Undertaker High Density Ported Turkey Choke Tube For Mossberg.’ I was using the Winchester ammo from Walmart (100 CT. for 21$ 7 shot) and it seemed to improve my pattern from 2 ft at 25 yds to 1 ft. I also tried their 4 shot and it had about an 8-10 ” pattern, very big improvement for me. I just wanted to know what rounds I should use when I go turkey hunting with my setup. I have heard 6 shot is very good. Can I get some semi-budget/budget loads? I don’t think my current setup is very good at longer range, that’s what I’m aiming for. Thank you in-advance!

I have never shot a deer/turkey, just pests.

Shotguns are great, shoulder sore after 25 rounds 🙂

The gun itself really isn’t as important as people make it seem. Your field craft skills will make more of a difference in harvesting a turkey than finding just the right load for your gun. I know a very good turkey hunter that just uses whatever leftover pheasant loads he has from the previous fall for his spring turkey hunt (usually a 1oz. 20 gauge loads).

Also this shouldn’t be the case. If a shotgun is unpleasant to shoot, something is wrong. Either it’s your technique or the cartridge doesn’t fit the gun. Or you’re just shooting to much of a given cartridge.

Turkey loads are quite pricey, and have quite a bit of recoil, you won’t want to shoot that many. Get the good stuff.

Also, you won’t be shooting turkeys at a super long range, if it patterns well at 25 yds in a dense pattern, you’re good to go.

Ps, give the 100 Round Pack of Federal shotgun shells a try, they are generally considered higher quality than the Walmart Winchester 100 round pack.
