I’m looking for a compact tactical shotgun for home defense. Something with rails I can mount a good red dot or holo sight to shoot clay pigeons with, too. I saw the M&P 12 and thought that might be a good choice but a little more research has indicated there are a lot of options, more than I can wrap my head around. My budget can stretch into the $2k range.

    What do you recommend?

lol, no, most clay ranges won’t even let you on the course with anything less than 24″ of barrel length. It would be about the worst clay gun possible in terms of balance and swing.

For $2k you can get into something like a Beretta A400 Xcel or Xcel Multitarget, then when you get home just put buckshot in it & put it back in the corner.

Mossberg 500/590 with 18 in barrel.

Yeah, no. You want a vent rib and a bead for clays. Get the Mossberg that comes with short and field barrels and you will be great

I got a Mossberg 500 that came with 2 barrels, a 24 incher for the trap/clays, and an 18 incher for home and stuff. Cost me like 350, and it’s perfect and fits two roles nicely.

Most ranges will not let you shoot shotguns with defensive length barrels, that’s not what that shotgun is meant to do.

    For $2,000 get an LTT 1301. [https://www.langdontactical.com/ltt-1301-shotgun/](https://www.langdontactical.com/ltt-1301-shotgun/)

Not sure if this is your 1st shotgun or an addition. That said, for home defense the youth model Remington or Mossberg is inexpensive and easy to handle in narrow doorways and halls. For sporting clays the same manufactures have the 870 and 500 respectively that can allow a scope, if needed. I have a shotgun set up to deer hunt with a scope, one for birds and sporting clay as well as a home defense shorty. All of those were inside your budget.

With your budget get a Mossberg 18″ for home defense and a separate Mossberg with longer barrel for clays. This way you don’t have to unload your defense rounds. Still plenty of bills left for target, buckshot and slugs.

EuroOptic has had 18″ SuperNovas and 28″ barrels. Get one of each and you can do both things.

I try to talk people out of shotguns for Home Defense, but to answer your question, something else. If you really like the M&P12, I’d recommend the Kel Tec KSG. It’s cheaper, has aftermarket support, and S&W stole that design for the M&P12. That will leave you more financial space for an optic, light, and sling. Plus more ammo.

Ready out of the box for clays, and an 18″ barrel swap will make it more appropriate for home defense. Way under that $2k number, plenty left to accessorize and stock up on shells.
