This is the “nobody needs an AR15, nobody needs high capacity magazines or access to buy as much ammo as you want” friend. Love him to death, but we disagree on a lot of political issues that I will admit, are from my “single issue voting” 2A beliefs.

I started him off with a 10/22 and let him shoot off a 25 rounder to get a feel, then switched him to my PX4 to get a feel for shooting handguns. He hit the paper every time, but wasn’t getting good groups (to be expected). He limp wristed a couple times, causing the next round to get hung up. I then let him try my Marlin 1894 in 38/357 and he was having a great time with that. After that, I pulled out my basic bitch AR with irons and had him try it out, right away he was getting ~5” groups at 20 yards. After putting a couple mags through it, I pulled out my nice 10.5” pistol build and had him see the difference between an entry level AR vs one that’s been upgraded. He shot half dollar sized groups with it.

Overall his favorite gun to shoot was my Marlin. He admitted that 30 rounds goes a lot faster than you’d think and that an AR is better for home defense (especially for novice shooters) than a handgun due to accuracy, recoil control and overall function. He said he definitely wants to go again and asked about the FOID card process, hopefully I can convert him.

Just a nice story and a friendly reminder to introduce the people in your life to your hobbies, we need more bodies on our side and this IS the way to do it!

If he goes through the FOID system he will understand the frustration of all IL gun owners.

Most people in the sport should realize that they should be facilitating participation in shooting sports as much as possible. The more people that participate, the more realize that it’s not as scary as the news makes it out to be. Whenever I take someone new to the range they always seem to comment about how it was fun and not what they thought it would be. Most people love shooting suppressed. Most people love shooting ARs. I think there would be a better understanding of what the second amendment means, and how precious it is, if more people we exposed to the joys of shooting and marksmanship. If people haven’t formed an opinion about firearms the news will do it for them and it’ll be one of misconception, and fear.

In my experience most people who hate guns have never had any actual experience with them.

I attend grass roots meetings in a certain far-left state (politically and geographically) for a certain national association of long guns. Each meeting the refrain is the same:

    * 2A is non partisan, get way from labels and push the issue
    * Take people out shooting

Good on you for helping perpetuate our rights.

If you go far enough left you get your guns back! Remind him all the great leftist thinkers supported the working class being armed.

Have taken a good share of my liberal college peers shooting, every one of them has left with a changed view and over half of them inquiring about the cheapest way to get into an AR

I’m extremely liberal/leftist and abhor violence, and it can be difficult to find peers in the firearm world (most of the gun-lovers I meet at the range are eager to get out there and use their firearms and be heroes, and I tend to think the best firearm owners are those who understand the sacred power of a gun and never, ever want to use it defensively, but are ready if necessary). So I’ve started taking my extremely liberal friends shooting and getting them hooked as well. Frankly, I think this is a solid commonality between right and left.

    That’s great man!

I too have a Bernie-loving friend that I have slowly been converting over the years. We would discuss (argue) gun rights vs gun control and he was always on the “ban assault weapons” and “10 RoUnDs Is EnOuGh” side. I’ve taken him on a few shooting trips in AZ where he shot some non-CA legal stuff along with some suppressor shooting and he loves it now. He even expresses interest in owning an AR and a handgun which he never used to before.

His views on banning mags and AR’s have changed and he now sees that banning these things wouldn’t help. I’m glad I was able to show at least one person that guns can be fun if used in a safe manner and aren’t just “killing machines”.

My buddy for years has been the most left leaning guy ive ever known. VERY openly anti gun. Like, was 100% all about every gun being banned. ALL of them, forver. Just through talking to me, and casual nice, non debate conversation, he started to be more curious… Was surprised to know that a 556 round was a 22 caliber bullet, and that it wouldnt go through 10 people in a row leaving a hold the size of a baseball in each before exploding the 10th. He was surprised to know that there had already been an assault weapons ban before, that was abolished because it didn’t work… He was surprised by a lot of things. i didn’t ridicule, didnt say “i told you so” ever. He is a good friend and I simply informed him, answered questions he had when he had them, linked him fun and informative videos on youtube like things from Demo ranch for just pure fun, and forgotten weapons, for more knowledge, to MAC, for a bit of both.

He is no longer anti gun, wants to buy a pistol himself, and when he visits me we are gonna go to the range, and he is very excited.

We get caught up too often with trying to argue. And not everyone will listen and not everyone has months, to a year to talk to someone almost daily playing video games or what have you to explain things and answer questions. But with enough time and effort anybody can at least see and understand your side. Even if they don’t agree at the end of the day, MOST people can at least admit they understand why you think the way you do, regardless if they believe it is warranted or not.

    >>“single issue voting” 2A beliefs.<<

You understand how important single issue voting is in regaining a balance in gun rights. We would have incredible numbers and power. I have tried really hard to get gun owners to unite behind this, temporarily to stop the anti gun momentum, but most find a reason to prioritize other issues, and we all lose. If we don’t protect the 2A, all other liberties are just words on paper.

I’m a really lefty person (Bernie all the way) and we’re not all against guns.

I don’t even think gun control laws would do anything now with how widespread they are and how 3D printing’s coming along. Ain’t no on going to give back their guns and I’d really prefer not to have a civil war.

I think mental health access has a *way* better shot of stymieing mass shootings than trying to ban assault weapons or whatever they want to call them today. Hell, look at Pensacola and the numerous times hand guns have been used, you can do a lot of damage with just a handgun…but you shouldn’t be so offended you feel like killing folks for calling you “pornstache”. That’s a mental health problem.

A lot of other liberals hate my opinion but it is what it is.

Making friends with some veterans in school and having a spirited but respectful discussion about guns is actually what converted me. These vets in some of my classes heard me out on why I was against most gun ownership and never talked down to me about my opinions; instead, they were respectful and said they could understand why a civilian with no experience with guns might see them the way I did. But they explained some of the mechanics and practical aspects i was wrong about and encouraged me to read up on things like how an AR-15 works so I’d see why they aren’t really any more dangerous than any other kind of semi-auto firearm. When i first told these vet friends that I was “anti-gun,” I expected them to be rude and pissed off, but their respectful response is what won me over.

I wish I had a friend to take me to the range to try out some guns to find out if I really want to go through the process of spending money on pistol safety class required just to be eligible and then getting the actual permit and whatnot.

Then maybe *I* could be the one who takes my anti-gun friend to the range…

I’ve had several friends like this (Sociology graduate). I’ve been saying for years, as a worker for 2nd Amendment rights you have to know how to be a responsible citizen and a lot of that is knowing that these rights are everyone’s rights and helping people of all walks of life understand that. Kudos to you

Reminds me of a young me. I’m not old but circa 2016 I was a bit of a libtard and guns pretty much changed my entire world view. Wasn’t really anti-gun but after going shooting once, I was like ,”Man that was a fucking blast, I need one.” and then my entire world view slowly shifted from there. Good luck showing him the light, I know how stubborn people can be and happy cake day!

I mean its nice that you did this but there are plenty of Bernie supporters who are also for strong 2a rights. Bernie hasnt made any claims for gun bans or anything else that im aware of. And if trump is really planning on going for a 3rd term like huckabee says we will need a strong 2a anyway.

I’m a liberal, but also a gun owner. I have yet to acquire an assault rifle but I have a Springfield XD .9 mm that’s sort of an assault pistol. I think the right to own guns is a pretty liberal ideology and yet most liberals disagree.

Most of us liberals don’t fear guns. We just want common sense gun laws. I own plenty of them, but I’m not an idiot. I know the laws we have are far too lax (SD and AR) in most of this country and dumb as fuck in others (I’m looking at you NYC and CT). Would I be upset if AR15s were banned? sure but not enough to change my vote to any GOP candidate. It’s not that most of us fear guns, but that we don’t care about them enough to vote Republican.
