Should I go with Pelican Sentinel 100x ($300), the Pelican Bounty 100x ($270), or Lifetime Tamarack Angler 100 ($270)? I will be using this kayak primarily for fishing but I would like to use it for just paddling as well. I am leaning towards the Tamarack. They all look like pretty solid picks.

    My advice:

    * try before you buy – demo days, rentals …
    * buy used, if possible, for your first. Look on Craigslist, local fishing forums, garage sales, etc
    * Perception Pescador is a great first yak and isn’t too expensive
    * Make sure you can afford a PFD

I use a Tamarack 100 with a 20 inch wide base stadium seat and it gets the job done. With my fishing gear I am over 300lbs and it is only rated to 275 but it don’t give a shit.

Almost bought a Tamarack but then found the teton 100. Has a stadium seat and plenty of deck area but no internal storage, which wasn’t a big deal to me. I most likely will be upgrading this spring to a 12ft, probably a Jackson bite or perception pescador.

I’ve been fishing out of a 10’ Pelican for like 7 years and it’s trash. Flipped it a couple times. Never feel confident in it…I’m such a stubborn cheapo though so I never upgraded. Also it’s light as a feather and easy to car-top. Probably it’s lone attribute.

That Tamarack seems way more stable. I never tried it on the water but I gave it a good once over in the store.

If you bumped your budget up just a bit, I really liked the look and feel of the Ascend 10T at Bass Pro! I might grab one of those…$499. Seems like a rock solid boat.

if you’re on a budget buy a used boat, I wouldn’t spend that kind of money on a pelican. Never heard of the lifetime so I can’t recommend it either.

I worked in a kayak fishing shop and the number one boat we had people try to sell us/trade in were Ascents and Pelicans.
