Instead of removing the finish, you could have the slide refinished or painted [cerrakote or one of the dozen other “proprietary” paints]

A paintjob for a slide can be done remotely [you can mail a slide without paperwork / licensing], and cheaply. If you decide you want it hit with electroless nickle, hard chrome, or something else, the price will go up.
