I suspect it may have something to do with the distinction between semi-auto AR-pattern rifles and actual for real select-fire machine guns. Blurring the distinction between these two things is in the interests of people who’d like the public to believe that “machine guns” are super easy to obtain and can be bought in any sporting goods store in America, as opposed to the reality that they’re heavily regulated and astronomically expensive.
