Your fly leader is one of the most, if not the most important, parts of your universal flycasting rig. With an excellent understanding of your fly leader, you will be able to have a better idea of how to catch the fish that you want by using the fly leader memory.
When a fly leader is pulled off of the reel, it will coil itself up so that you can easily store it on the reel. That being said, various types of fly leaders are better at keeping memory based on the materials that they use.
When you first buy your fly leader, you should straighten it out because the leader will be a bit hard to manage initially. To do this, all you need is a leader straightener. This straightener is made up of two pieces of rubber that go between leather. You simply put the leader through the rubber and pull it. This rubber friction will cause the leader to increase in temperature and you can then shape it into a straight line. If you do not have a leader straightener, you can use your fingers. It works best if your fingers are dry, and all you do is hold the end of the leader in one hand and with the other hand you run your fingers along the leader, squeezing as you move down the entire length. At the end, hold the leader in your fingers and stretch it while it cools down. It can take a few times to get it straight.
The best thing to remember is that the material your leader is made out of gives it the ability to hold a memory. No different than heating up metal and shaping it while it is hot, you are doing the same with the leader. By heating up the leader through a leader straightener, or through your fingers, you are making your casting better and you will find more success with your fishing.
One of the most common questions is which should you use, the straightener or your fingers. Well, the straightener will work quicker and will probably do a better job of straightening the leader, but it is going to cost you extra money if it is not already part of your tackle. If you don’t want to spend any extra money, then you can use your fingers. It can take some practice to do it right but you will never have to replace your fingers like you will a leader straightener. Plus, your fingers are free and you can use them to straighten out the leader at any time. You can’t forget them, like you can forget a leader straightener.
When you straighten your leader, you will find that everything is easier with fly fishing. Leader memory is a very important concept that many new fly fishermen seem to forget about. Don’t forget about it because leader memory can be one of your best assets when fly fishing with the universal fly and the universal flycasting rig.
